We were deeply honored to have John Oxendine, the State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, as our guest speaker for May. Mr. Oxendine enlightened and up-dated the members regarding insurance legislative changes and the importance of maintaining excellent safety fire standards, as well as other issues. A question and answer session followed. What a wonderful way to conclude our last meeting until September. Thank you Mr. Oxendine!

The “Grand Old Purlers” and Izzy Dolls

north fulton republican women

Betty Voyles, VP of NFRWC was so inspired when she read an article that appeared in the newspaper about a group of women in West Cobb knitting dolls, called the “Izzy” which are sent to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, that she wanted to know more about how to make them as a proposed club project.

The Izzy was named after Mark “Izzy” Isfeld, who was killed while clearing land mines in Croatia in 1994. His mother, Carol Isfeld, after seeing a photo that Mark had taken of a broken doll in a bombed-out rubble started making the dolls out of bright yarn and sending them to her son so that he could give them to the children. Betty and Michele Friedman introduced the dolls to the membership who embraced the idea and “The Grand Old Purlers” was formed. The members have already started kitting the dolls which are small and will fit into the pockets of the soldiers. NFRWC’s goal is to knit a box full which will be sent to the Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church’s “Any Soldier Mission” and then on to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan for the children.

If you would like to find out additional information or to assist with this project, please contact, Betty Voyles at: 770-393-3660 or Michele Friedman at: 678-566-2823.

Angela Bean and Georgians For Fairtax

Angela Bean, District 3 Director “Georgias For Fairtax” was the guest speaker at NFRWC’s April meeting. Angela explained that the FairTax Plan is a non partisan proposal that replaces the federal income and payroll taxes with a progressive tax on consumption (national retail sales tax.) Our soldiers, home on leave, return to Iraq with phone cards collected by our club and the Chattahoochee RWC and South Fulton RWC. This effort gave their unit nearly 15000 minutes of international phone time to call family and friends.

Our club assisted heart patient, Sarah Anne Voyles, 15, of Sandy Springs in researching and writing her bills to promote awareness for heart disease in young people and children.

She is shown with Senator Johnny Isakson who sponsored her bill in the Senate and Rep. Tom Price, M.D. who introduced her bill in the House. Both bills passed declaring February 14 “A Day of Hearts”, Congenital Heart Defect Day.
